About Kokernag

Kokernag is the site of the largest freshwater spring in the entire Kashmir Valley — a powerful, year-round spring that gushes from the base of a weathered limestone cliff into a series of clear, cold channels that irrigate the surrounding land. Located at an altitude of 2,000 metres in the Anantnag district, the spring has been revered for centuries and is closely associated with the Sufi saint Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani (Nund Rishi), the patron saint of Kashmir.

The Floriculture Department maintains beautifully terraced botanical gardens around the spring, where stone pathways wind through beds of roses, irises, and seasonal flowers set against a canopy of mature walnut, almond, and willow trees. The gardens are arranged in a cascade pattern that follows the natural flow of the spring water downhill, creating a layered landscape of pools, channels, and flowering terraces that feels like a living amphitheatre.

Within the garden complex sits Kashmir's oldest trout fish hatchery, established during the Dogra period. Visitors can watch rainbow and brown trout being reared in concrete tanks fed by the ice-cold spring water — the same water that ultimately flows into the Bringi River and joins the Jhelum. The hatchery supplies trout fingerlings to streams and lakes across the valley and has played a key role in establishing Kashmir's reputation for freshwater angling.

Kokernag is also an ideal base for visiting the nearby Achabal Mughal Garden (10 km), one of the three great imperial gardens of Kashmir built by Empress Nur Jahan in 1620. Together, Kokernag, Achabal, and Verinag form a "spring and garden triangle" in south Kashmir that offers a peaceful alternative to the busier northern tourist circuits around Srinagar and Gulmarg.

Best Time to Visit

Kokernag is best visited from April to September. Spring (April–May) is especially beautiful when the terraced gardens burst into bloom with tulips, irises, and roses, and the spring flow is at its most powerful from snowmelt. Summer (June–August) offers pleasant weather with temperatures around 20–28°C, perfect for garden walks and picnics. The garden remains open in autumn, though flower displays fade by late September. Winters are cold and the gardens see limited visitors from November to March.

How to Reach

Kokernag is located 75 km south of Srinagar Airport (SXR), roughly a 2.5-hour drive via the Srinagar–Anantnag highway (NH44) followed by a scenic diversion through south Kashmir's agricultural heartland. From Pahalgam, Kokernag is approximately 25 km (about 1 hour). The approach road passes through rice paddies, walnut orchards, and small Kashmiri villages. Local buses and shared taxis from Anantnag town (18 km) run regularly. The spring and gardens are located right beside the main road, making access easy.
