Aru Valley is one of Kashmir's best-kept secrets — a quiet, unspoilt meadow village nestled 12 kilometres upstream from Pahalgam along the Lidder River at an altitude of 2,414 metres. Unlike the busier tourist spots in the valley, Aru retains its authentic pastoral atmosphere, with Gujjar and Bakerwal shepherds grazing their flocks across wide, flower-dotted meadows framed by dense pine and deodar forests.
The valley is the gateway to some of Kashmir's most legendary treks. It serves as the base camp for the Kolahoi Glacier — the largest glacier in the Kashmir Valley at 11 km long — and the starting point for the spectacular Tarsar-Marsar twin lakes trek, one of the finest multi-day treks in the Indian Himalayas. From Aru, trekkers head through the emerald Lidderwat meadow before ascending to the alpine lakes perched at over 3,800 metres.
Even if you are not a trekker, Aru Valley rewards a visit. The drive from Pahalgam follows the Lidder River through towering pine forests, and the village itself has a handful of wooden guesthouses, tea stalls serving kehwa and noon chai, and panoramic views of the Kolahoi range. Pony rides to the upper meadows are popular, and the valley is a wonderful spot for photography, birdwatching, and simply soaking in the silence of the mountains.
Aru Valley has also gained recognition as a filming location — its sweeping meadows and dramatic mountain backdrop have featured in several Bollywood productions. In winter, the valley is blanketed in snow and becomes a staging ground for ski touring and snowshoe expeditions into the backcountry.
Aru Valley is accessible from April to October. Spring (April–May) covers the meadows in wildflowers while the peaks remain snowcapped — ideal for photography. Summer (June–August) is the best window for multi-day treks to Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar-Marsar lakes, with daytime temperatures between 15–25°C. Autumn (September–October) brings golden chinar leaves and fewer crowds. The valley is snowbound in winter and generally inaccessible to regular vehicles from November through March.
Aru Valley is 12 km from Pahalgam and 107 km from Srinagar Airport (Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, SXR). From Srinagar, drive to Pahalgam via Anantnag (approximately 3 hours). From Pahalgam, take a shared taxi, union cab, or private vehicle along the Aru road — the drive takes about 30 minutes through dense pine forests along the Lidder River. Pony rides from Pahalgam to Aru are also available for a more scenic approach.
